Disease Transmission
Background Information
Germs are everywhere - in the air, our homes, our
vehicles and our bodies. An infection occurs when germs or pathogens
enter our bodies and affect one or more organs. Many germs are killed
routinely by the body's immune system when they enter. When germs are
not killed by the body, infections can occur.
Infectious diseases range from colds and infections to
HIV/AIDS. Bacteria causes infections such as strep throat or meningitis,
which can be cured by antibiotics. Medications however, have not been
proven to fight against viruses.
The Truth behind Disease Transmission
The fear of disease transmission often prevents people
from assisting in the scene of injuries or accidents. In actual
fact, the risk of getting a disease is actually low. Many diseases are
passed from person to person but disease transmission can be
reduced by taking precautions.
In order to catch an infectious disease, all four
conditions listed below must occur:
-
There is the presence of the germ or pathogen
-
There is a route of entry into the body
-
The immune system is weak
-
There is a large enough quantity of the germ or
pathogen
If any one of these four conditions are eliminated, the infection
cannot occur. Using proper precautions when handling a casualty (i.e.
gloves,
masks,
gowns,
glasses) can eliminate the route of
entry and can prevent disease transmission.
