First Aid Training Can Save Lives AND Reduce Costs!

As an employer, you may be aware that workplace safety is regulated by your province and requires you to have first aid training provided to a number of your employees. What you might not know is the impact that first aid training can have – not only in saving lives – but also in saving your business money.

In the event of a life-threatening injury or illness such as bleeding, head and neck injuries, stroke, heart attack, and more, employees trained in first aid will be able to assess the situation and make decisions in course of treatment that can greatly increase the survival rate of the injured or sick person until professional medical assistance arrives. Having an AED on hand can increase that survival rate even more in the cases of cardiac arrest.

But first aid training comes with advantages for a business beyond the obvious and priceless one of saving lives. Employees trained in first aid will be more aware of hazards and injury causing situations, taking more actions to address and correct these situations before an injury can occur. By reducing the likelihood of injury, you are reducing the instances of workers compensation and lost work time due to injury. By increasing safety awareness and promoting a culture of safety at your workplace, you can directly affect your bottom line.

Not only do first-aid trained workers help to prevent injury in the first place, but if injury or illness does occur, their training will allow them to swiftly assess and provide immediate treatment. Injured employees who are provided with quick treatment may have reduced healing times and costs, making them able to possibly return to work sooner.

For every employee that is first aid trained, the  rate and severity of injury is greatly reduced. Reduced injuries to your workers generally mean improved confidence and productivity. Not only that, but employees who can see that their employer takes safety and first aid seriously, provides more than the minimum required amount of training, and responds swiftly and effectively, will feel they are working for an employer who truly cares about their well-being. They can then spend less time worrying about their injured coworkers, increasing productivity and morale.

First aid training saves lives, and that’s the most important benefit to having trained employees at your workplace. Beyond that, consider the reduced costs associated with the reduced rate and severity of workplace injury and illnesses that first aid training brings.

  1. I like how you mentioned that the rate and severity of the injury are greatly reduced if every employee is first aid trained. My wife’s friend was recently injured at her job and she was told that she could’ve recovered faster if someone knew how to properly treat her broken arm. I’ll be sure to let my wife know that she should learn first aid to help herself and others in certain situations.
